Hot off the Twitter, New York Times'Catherine Rampell shares some interesting data about movers in 2012:
nation’s overall mover rate increased from a record low of 11.6 percent in 2011 to 12.0 percent in 2012, per US Census

Okay maybe that's not so interesting, but this helps:
most common move last year was New York to Florida, with 59,288 movers. 2nd was California to Texas, with 58,992

The question of motive surely varies although I can't imagine that many New Yorkers wanting to increase their chances of ending up on The Smoking Gun or Californians that want a better chance of getting shot.
